Lithium Battery Fire Safety: The New Threat in QLD Homes

Charged & Dangerous: The Rising Threat of Lithium Battery Fires in Queensland

Walk into any garage in South East Queensland, and you will likely find them: e-scooters, e-bikes, cordless drills, and robotic vacuums.

We love our cordless convenience. But as the number of lithium-ion batteries in our homes increases, so does the fire risk. QFES (Queensland Fire Department) has reported a significant spike in residential fires caused by battery “thermal runaway”—a chemical reaction that is nearly impossible to extinguish once it starts.

At SEQ Fire Protection Services, we want you to enjoy your gadgets safely. Here is what you need to know to prevent your charging station from turning into a disaster zone.

What is “Thermal Runaway”?

In simple terms, thermal runaway occurs when a battery cell overheats and triggers a chain reaction in the cells around it. It doesn’t just burn; it explodes with intense heat and releases toxic gas.

Unlike a standard timber fire, a lithium battery fire creates its own oxygen, meaning a fire blanket or standard extinguisher often won’t stop it.

The “Queensland Factor”

Why is this so critical for us? Heat and Humidity. Leaving a battery charging in a stifling hot Brisbane garage in January, or in direct sunlight on a Gold Coast balcony, significantly increases the risk of failure.

4 Rules for Battery Safety

This is the golden rule. If a fire starts at 2:00 AM in the garage, it may block your exit route before you even wake up. Only charge devices when you are awake and present.

Only use the charger that came with the product. Cheap aftermarket chargers often lack the “shut-off” safety mechanisms that prevent overcharging.

If you’ve just ridden your e-scooter or used your power tool, let the battery cool down to room temperature before plugging it in.

Never charge phones, tablets, or batteries on beds or couches. These surfaces trap heat.

Your First Line of Defence

Because battery fires escalate so quickly (often in seconds), early detection is vital.

This is where your choice of smoke alarm saves lives. Photoelectric smoke alarms—the only type we install—are superior at detecting the visible smoke particles produced in the early stages of a fire compared to old ionisation types.

Furthermore, we exclusively stock Australian Made alarms. These units are rigorously tested to ensure they don’t just beep when it’s too late—they alert you the moment danger is present.

We aren’t saying you need to throw away your e-bike. We just want you to respect the power stored inside it. Treat your batteries with care, keep them out of the heat, and ensure your smoke alarm system is interconnected and working.
